The Bishop Strachan School Master Plan
Toronto / 2006 / 2.76 ha.
Located in the Forest Hill area of Toronto, BNC has configured a multi-phased Master Plan for the 2.76 hectares of the Bishop Strachan Schools’ Campus to accommodate the evolving educational programming of this landmark institution within the City. The master plan has emphasized the heritage and tradition of one of the country’s oldest independent schools on the one hand, while providing new and renovated facilities that accommodate openness, transparency and forward looking educational programming on the other. Principals of clear orientation, abundant natural light, sustainable development and mitigation of vehicular impacts underwrite the design of the master plan.
BNC has constructed 122,000 sf of additional education spaces within a compact 3-storey wing, linked to existing campus school buildings, drop-offs, and courtyards. The fitness centre, gymnasium, and underground parking, utilize the change in grade, with daylighting from skylights and light wells.
The new campus developments realized through this master plan have sensitively integrated substantial additional facilities and built space within the heritage context and the surrounding neighbourhood by minimizing their footprint and mass while maximizing green outdoor play areas.
BNC has recently completed an additional 90,000 sf of new and renovated spaces, to realize BSS’s vision of modern educational facilities within a heritage context.
